My Home

My Home

My home
has high ceilings,
a big front garden, a small yard at the back,
and every summer
the drone from over the fence
of a neighbour back from his boarding school,
practising bagpipes.
My home has a knocking cat.
Skype calls at weekends
to brother Alfie in Hong Kong,
and endless brittle autumn leaves that hide
in the flower borders and under the bench all year long.
A home with wishes on birthdays,
and pirates with fairy wings.
A family who work hard and feel good about it.
With Humbugs on winter mornings,
and wine gums when something isn't right.
With sandals for school in summer,
and boots for walking through snow in winter.
