TALK: RECONSIDERING GEORGE MACBETH

Despite being a wonderfully inventive poet, a power in the poetry world and a larger-than-life character, George Macbeth (1932-92) seems to have been forgotten since his premature death from motor neurone disease. Friend and fellow member of The Group, Fleur Adcock reminds us why he still matters.

Fleur Adcock was born in Papakura, New Zealand in 1934 and spent the war years in England, returning with her family to her homeland in 1947. She emigrated to Britain in 1963, working as a librarian in London until 1979. Her publications include Selected Poems (1983) and Poems 1960-2000 (2000) which won the Queen’'s Gold Medal for Poetry. She subsequently stopped writing for several years but returned to poems in 2003, resulting in her most recent collection, Dragon Talk (2010). more…
